Ukraine: Abducted Children and Mechanisms for Accountability

The hearing was dedicated the abduction of Ukrainian children and ongoing accountability efforts related to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The hearing provided an update on the status of efforts to account for and repatriate children deported from Ukraine and ongoing accountability efforts related to the conflict, and explored what steps Congress could take to help. The participants also discussed how to address the newly-released findings about the involvement of Russian energy companies in the illegal transfer and re-education of Ukrainian children.

The Abduction of Ukrainian Children by the Russian Federation

The hearing on the abduction of Ukrainian children featured testimonies from representatives of the US Congress and academics as well as Ukrainian government and civil society groups involved in the work on abducted children of Ukraine.

The hearing focused on the systematic nature of Russia’s abductions and re-education through personal stories and open-source data. The hearing also exposed the oppressive policies Ukrainian children face under Russian occupation. During the hearing news broke about the illegal transfer of Ukrainian children to North Korean military camps.

Negotiating the End of the War in Ukraine: Who is on the Children's Side?

This conversation is focused on how the issue of abducted children and those under occupation should be handled during potential peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia and what negotiators should keep in mind when it comes to children. Participants share success stories of returning children to Ukraine and in other conflicts, and discuss how the American government should respond to this crisis.

Children Praying for Children is an annual advocacy campaign launched by the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) in 2024 to raise awareness about the illegal abduction of Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied territories by russian authorities.
